An action adventure game.
I bought my PSP way back in May 2005. It came with one game cartridge, titled ‘Ridge Racer’. But for my first ever review of all kinds, I will not touch on this free game. The game which I am going to touch here is ‘God of War’. Well to others this game is a thing of a past, as it was released in the same year I bought my PSP. Then I didn’t even know this game exist. Surprise? I am more than surprised. For crying out loud!
Only back in June this year I got to know about this game…aiyoh! Why so slow. For the record, I am actually not a hardcore gamer. Just play games for the fun factors and only play when I am really free. Got hooked on Ridge Racer though in the early stage… erm OK now back to ‘GOW’, that’s what I call it. By the way, this review comes from someone who is actually a part-time gamer… so might not appeal to some lah!
This is one hell of a game…the moment I start playing, I got attached to it…the beginning is so so good. Alamak got hooked lah! As I am a graphic designer…I admire the graphics…really superb…classy. This is an action-adventure game and based on Greek mythology.
To be frank, actually I just don’t get it…what kind of excitement do you get by playing games that require you to slash, hack, kill and do whatever you please to ‘win’and proceed to the next level. Perhaps these are the reasons that prevented me from discovering this award winning game a little earlier…take it easy…better be late than never!
So I started playing it with an open heart. What a wonderful experience I had. For a start, I just follow through the ‘flow’ of the main character, a bald man called Kratos and manage to clear each level fully satisfied…not that I or Kratos have killed so many creatures I don’t even know their names – but more of the ‘shiok’going through all those motions; like jumping, climbing, swinging of swords, pushing, pulling, running, walking, going up and down staircases etc in this small screen virtual world -it was totally a new experience for me and very captivating.
The satisfaction level I felt was undescribable (yup, not about the killing part, more of how you move and get the work done around a well-crafted background scenes that was incredibly and ‘beautifully done’, an imaginary world full of cool sceneries and landscapes, not forgetting unforgettable beasts/creatures) –thanks to the designers of this game. They had done a great job man! And they did all these way back in maybe 2003/2004 before GOW was finally released in 2005 – they are for sure real visionaries. Kudos to them!
And back to those creatures – whose looks my son really hate as they scare him - that come and go. I got to know their names only later –though not all. Of all the names of these horrendous looking creatures from hell – I only got one right, ie Medusa….aiyoh these snake lady monsters…really one kind…had problem trying to take cover from their attacks…always got myself turned to stone….and dead at that! Heartless being! But what a great fight girls!
For a record, I got stuck at ‘Falls of Oceanum’. I kind of overlook the next move and missed to collect my ‘health’and gorgon eye, whatsoever. Almost give up, cos after defeating Medusa and other hordes of hostile creatures (my fingers and some part of my lower arm were too tired and restless) I don’t even know where to go (blame Kratos not me – always die by committing suicide over the ledge repeatedly…haha) . So I decided to rely on the walkthrough from the web as recommended by an office colleague…did more reading…and try again few days later…and bingo! I did it! After so many unsuccessful attempts, I got to jump and climb over the ledge safely …huh…so simple huh…that’s what I did earlier but failed and this time round Okayed! These designers, I think, they deliberately plan their craft this way. They want you to keep on trying and not to give up so easily...erm.
Have yet to complete the game…must fight and kill Ares! (That’s what I read in the plot)
Last but not least, I found that the slow-mo part was quite disturbing…slows down the movement…and Kratos should have eye-power just like Medusa. Very cool…and not in green but pink! Maybe should have hidden explanation on clearing the stage for those who got stuck somewhere…so that they can continue the journey…to be the next GOW!
